Haiti for starters
In developing our documentary, Not About Me, we have collected some useful resources for background context and thinking. Here on our Noteworthy updates, we’ll share some of the best we’ve found. Take a look or dive deep…
READING 101
When we started developing this film, we wanted to understand how Morgan’s own initial intentions toward — and preconceptions of — Haiti in 2010 might relate to the global response to the disaster (big-hearted but also seemingly misguided). For us, this book exposed many cracks in institutions, systems and our own assumptions. News correspondent Jonathan Katz experienced the earthquake and its aftermath first hand. From Goodreads: “Katz presents a sharp critique of international aid that defies today’s conventional wisdom; that the way wealthy countries give aid makes poor countries seem irredeemably hopeless, while trapping millions in cycles of privation and catastrophe. Katz follows the money to uncover startling truths about how good intentions go wrong, and what can be done to make aid ‘smarter.’”
ESSENTIAL INFOGRAPHIC
Seriously. How had we missed this information before? This infographic developed by the Lumos Foundation was a revelation of facts and context for us as filmmakers and the people we shared it with. Did you know there are eight million “orphans” living in institutions worldwide? And that 80% of those children actually have a living parent who could care for them at home with community support? One of many eye-opening truths we should know. “Out of the Shadows” highlights the growing problem of institutionalized child care and shares the progress that’s being made to end this global injustice against children. >Download infographic.
But why are children with parents living in orphanages? And what are the alternatives? Another Lumos download, “Children in Institutions: The Global Picture”, provides plain-speak information and graphics.
